Soliman: I can beat Winky!

October 14 2005

IBF#1 middleweight Sam Soliman (31-7) is scheduled to meet WBC#1/WBA#1 middleweight Ronald " Winky" Wright (49-3) at the Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, CT, USA on December 10 in the biggest fight of his boxing career. Despite being a heavy underdog "Team Soliman" which includes manager Stuart Duncan and trainer Dave Hedgecock, are very confident that Soliman will defeat the classy southpaw Wright.

Soliman said, "I respect Winky for taking the fight - he knows only to well what its like to have people avoid you. He is an 11-time Champ with some pretty good scalps on his record - Trinidad - Mosely - McKart. He has had to travel the road to get the fights he wants and is a true warrior. Winky has a good solid defense steady workrate and is accurate with his punches. His chin is good and I'm tipping it will be a long night in the ring with plenty of action. I know I can beat Winky but I would prefer to let my fists do the talking on December 10. Right now Im just totally focused on this date and my message to Winky is 'Thanks for the opportunity mate' and I'll see you at the weigh in."

Soliman's manager Stuart Duncan is confident his charge will win over Wright. Duncan said,"Sam's awkward style will test Winky like he hasn't been tested before. It doesn't take long to look at Winky's record to establish that he hasn't been in the ring with someone quite like Sam. Styles make fights and we beleive that Sam can take Winky into unchartered waters forcing mistakes. Sam's unorthodox style along with stamina and workrate will cause Winky all sorts of problems. In saying this, Winky is by far the best opponent Sam has faced to date and we respect him as the dangerous opponent he is. He hasn't earned his reputation as one of the sport's pound for pound best by accident."

Sam Soliman's trainer Dave Hedgecock respects Winky Wright as a great boxer. Hedgecock said, "What can I say about Winky? Whenever I look at video on Sam's upcoming opponents, in developing strategies I look for the boxer's strengths and weaknesses. Winky is a smart thinking boxer who is capable of adapting his style as the fight goes on, and a boxer who would be almost impossible to beat the second time around as McKart and Mosely are testament. With Winky you only get one chance and I am confident that Sam's style will expose a weakness that only Sam would be able to exploit. Notice I said "expose a weakness," that's because in studying him I couldn't find one."
